Mr Jim McManus came into school this week to talk to class 4 about the East Hetton pit. He talked about the history of the pit in the village and about the wildlife that now exists on the reclaimed pit land.
We then went for a walk to see the site ourselves and noticed some of the problems that spoil this area such as litter, fly tipping and damage to gates and fencing.
Back in the classroom we discussed these problems then suggested what we would like to happen to this land and possible solutions for the problems.
Jim also brought along some old tools from the pit and explained how they were used. We then had a chance to handle the tools and were surprised by how heavy some of them were.
All the children were given a questionnaire to find out your views on the site - please return this. As part of the consultation with the community process there is a drop in session at the school on Wednesday 11th March between 2.00pm and 4.00pm.
